I’ve had a few requests already from people for a copy of my book or advice on how to help the victims of the fires currently still raging around the state.
My advice would be: Now is not the time. Grief comes in waves and we need to let that wash for a while. Listen to them gently as they talk of what is lost and how it all happened.
But mostly, let them help, too. Let them help themselves. Give them the means to get back on their feet, but let them be a part of recovering their lives and supporting others to do the same.
For me, there was nothing worse than being the victim, being in the one-down position. It’s true that in grief our mind is so full that making decisions is difficult. But asking someone to cook the pasta, help box up some goods for others, do something in the heart of things now- that is what, I believe, will help fix their journey from victim to survivor.
